Prepare For Fall & Winter
Don't be caught unprepared in severe weather. Have a reputable garage perform a tune-up and inspection on your vehicle to prevent problems. Here are some tips to help prepare your vehicle for Pennsylvania cold weather.
Brakes/Antilock System
The brakes must be faultless and equalized to prevent pulling to one side, which may cause skidding. A brake flush is recommended every 2 years for safe, optimal performance.
Cooling System
Every 3-4 years, depending on your manufacturer’s recommendations, have your cooling system flushed with a good chemical cleaner and refilled with fresh anti-freeze that can handle low-temperatures. Check reservoirs, belts, hoses, pressure caps and the thermostat.
Battery and Electrical System
If your battery is several years old have it checked. Be sure connections are clean and tight. Don’t get stranded in wintry weather with a dead battery!
Engine
A diagnostic check-up of the engine is a good pre-winter investment. If you're due for a tune-up, have it done to prevent other major problems from occurring. Faulty wiring, worn spark plugs, a choke that sticks, or emission control devices that need attention, can all lead to hard starting.
Exhaust System
Check the muffler and tail pipe system for carbon monoxide leaks. These leaks are especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed.
Fuel System
Make sure there is plenty of gas in your tank at all times. A full tank minimizes condensation, which may cause gas line freezing.
Heaters, Defrosters and Wipers
Ensure your windshield offers you clear vision of the road and traffic around you even in harsh weather conditions. Have heaters, defrosters and wipers checked to make sure they’re fully operational. Install new wiper blades.
Oil and Filter
Dirty oil can cause trouble anytime, so change the oil and filter regularly. Check the fuel, air and transmission filters as well.
